So, who skipped work yesterday to grab a copy of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty?

One of the best things about living in Southeast Asia is that we get several hours of lead time for product launches. I wrote about my experience here. If you pre-ordered a copy of WoL, you were guaranteed a T-shirt and dog tag to go with your standard-edition set. Besides the manual and dual-OS DVD, WoL comes with 2 sets of guest passes for 10 hours of World of Warcraft and 8 hours of Wings of Liberty.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty comes packed with quite a number of social features, including the following:

  • RealID concept, allowing you to share personal information with trusted friends and chat across Blizzard games (this is similar to how Steam Community games work)
  • Facebook integration, where you're able to search your Facebook account for friends who own copies of WoL and add them to your friend roster. You can customize your public profile to display trophies from achievements and unlock rewards such as new user portraits
Battle.net really got an overhaul!

Although I still haven't finished the "single player" campaign, it is quite apparent that the gameplay does incorporate role-playing elements between missions, where Jim Raynor gets to interact with people on his ship, purchase upgrades for units and structures, hire mercenaries, and research specific technologies that enable him to combat both the Zerg and Protoss. The arcade mini game Lost Viking, an obvious tribute to one of Blizzard's very first games, is also a welcome freebie that you can play between missions.

For those who are still undecided about Starcraft II, you're probably waiting for the price to go down or for the game to end up in your friendly Greenhills tiangge. Well, although piracy is a fact of life, I sincerely think that the P3,500 is worth plopping down for this game simply because there's a lot of community integration happening. And in due time, I'm quite excited to see what Blizzard has in store for the entire platform.

If you're on WoL, do add me up. My player ID is LOLMOWER.

  2. panaxim: it was worth the wait, gameplay 10/10 IMHO.... is it worth the 3500?... i think the price is steep, regardless of the free t-shirt and dogtag that comes with the package, it might take a while for the price to go down .. but it will get there.. :)
