Tips on how to surf the Web safely
Today is the second International Data Privacy Day, and we thought it'd be nice if we came up with a list of things that would help you, our dearest readers, stay safe on the Web. Think of these tips as virtual condoms, so to speak.

Hire a guard – an Internet Security guard
Keeping your home PC safe from hackers is no laughing matter, and it takes more than an anti-virus program to keep it secure. Investing in Internet security programs like Norton and Kaspersky will greatly reduce the risk of data and identity theft and protect you from keystroke loggers.

Hunt down seals
Verification seals such as VeriSign and our very own Sure Seal ensure that the sites you are visiting are the real deal. Sure Seal, in particular, goes as far as verifying if the business itself is also legit, not just the website. Be especially wary of sites that ask for personal information such as credit-card numbers.

Report anomalies to the CICT's NCSO
The NCSO or the National Cyber Security Office is a government coordinating body under the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) that takes charge of maintaining security on the Philippine webspace. Should you become a victim or know of victims of cybercrimes, contact Jun Malacaman at jun@malacaman.com.
