Google Chrome OS netbooks are cheaper than the iPad

The whole tech community, including us here in the Philippines, has been overran by the iPad phenomenon (or hype, depending on how you view it). As if to say that they're still here, the guys over at Apple's rival, Google, have announced that the upcoming Chrome OS netbooks, which will be rolled out early next year, will be priced between $300-$400 (about P14,000-P18,500). They're definitely cheaper than Steve Jobs' precious!

If reports of leaked specs are to be trusted, then we should be expecting 2GB of RAM, 64GB of solid state memory, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and Ethernet from these babies. They might even be powered by an ARM chip together with Nvidia's Tegra system-on-a-chip, which will boost audio and video capabilities.

Of course, the biggest draw here is that they will have the new Chrome operating system. According to no less than Google's CEO Eric Schmidt, the Web-based OS might be the most significant development in the operating-system market in the last 20 years. He added, "If you think about it, there's not been a new successful platform in this space for 20 years, and I've had a few failures along the way."

With these new devices, Google is again in a collision course with Apple. The question is, how will the Chrome OS netbooks measure up against the iPad? Apple COO Tim Cook shares his boss' sentiments: "I can't think of a single thing a netbook does well." Uh-oh.

P.S. So are you a part of Team Apple, or are you rooting for Team Google? Let us know in the poll below.
