'Avatar' earns a billion dollars, fastest ever

James Cameron Geek Cred

What's blue, larger than life, and can take down the Titanic? Nope, not an iceberg but James Cameron's ground-breaking fantasy/sci-fi flick Avatar.

According to box-office analyst Chad Hartigan of Exhibitor Relations, Avatar has made more than $670 million internationally and more than $352 million in the US in a mere 17 days since its debut. This brings the movie's box-office total to more than $1 billion dollars, making it the fourth biggest-grossing movie to date next only to Titanic with $1.842 billion, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with $1.119 billion, and Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with $1.066 billion.

The figures, however, can still be disputed, as IMAX ticket prices are roughly two times more expensive than a regular theater's. That means despite reaching the billion-dollar mark, Avatar potentially has half the audience of the top three flicks.

In any case, it still shows that people are willing to spend a billion dollars on a sci-fi movie. If Avatar lasts for as long as two months in theaters as did Titanic, it has a real chance of sinking the unsinkable ship movie.

Make no mistake, James Cameron is the only person who can beat James Cameron.

  3. ken cross: This does not take into account also that non-IMAX 3D ticket prices are $3-$5 more than the non-3D ticket prices, at least in the movie theaters in California. So I would agree that at this point more people have seen Titanic.

Now just because a movie has made $1 bn does it mean it's actually a good movie? Ah sweet pablum for the m*sses. Great eye candy that only lasts until the credits. Afterward you scratch your head wonder, "Was that supposed to be good?"

  4. SpdrMnky: My question is this: How does it compare to the number of people that saw Star Wars? If I remember correctly, and I may not, they said the same thing when comparing Titanic to Star Wars, "Due to inflation, it made more money yet sold fewer tickets."
