'Be wary of free online movie blogs'

Posted on: 09/05/09 by David Corpuz

If your guilty pleasure besides going to Greenhills (wink) is to look for free movies to watch online, you gotta be extra careful as cyber criminals have now turned to movies to distribute malware.

Based on the latest threat bulletin of Symantec's Security Response, these cyber criminals create movie blogs hosted by a reputable site but actually redirect you to a malware-infested one.

For example, Google search results for free copies of movies Obsessed (released April this year) and Inkheart (released last January) usually lead users to a Blogspot page that contains a fake codec. The codec delivers Trojan for both Windows and Mac operating systems. Just check out the next few images.

The table below shows that the most recent movie titles are usually instrumental in spreading malware.

To prevent its spread, you must:

  • update your anti-virus software to prevent any attacks on your computer;
  • download applications and files directly from official websites; and
  • be skeptic at all times when visiting "free online movie" sites.

Then again, you already know that, didn't you?
