Canon PowerShot G11 carries 10-megapixel sensor (only)

It's a surprising move to say the least, especially as it involves the G-series of macho point-and-shoots. The new PowerShot G11 brings down the megapixel count from 15 megapixels to a mere 10. Ahh, but there's method to this madness...

The step down involves replacing the sensor with a new high-sensitivity CCD that, according to the official press release, improves noise performance by up to two stops. We're sure the improvements will be apparent once we get our mitts on it.

We can't help thinking, however, that the decrease in pixel count might be a turnoff for dudes who still subscribe to the megapixel myth. God knows they're still out there.

Other improvements we love include the vari-angle LCD screen which is not unlike the one found in the Nikon D5000. The G11's smaller bod, however, gives it a serious advantage as it's lighter and has a much shorter protruding lens.

The G11 is selling for $499 overseas, so expect to pay at least P25,000 for it once it comes to the Philippines – hopefully before Christmas.
