China shuts down hacker training site

China recently pulled the plug on Black Hawk Safety Net, a 180,000-strong hacker training site. This came amid growing concern that China has become the center for cyber-crime. You still haven't forgotten about Google's threat to shut down its operations there, have you?

Black Hawk Safety Net is known to spread Trojan software and tips on hacking, and is said to be the largest of its kind in China. Three people suspected of running the site were arrested by police in China's Hubei province. Seized were 9 servers, 5 computers, and a car. The police also freezed 1.7 million yuan (about P11.5 million) in assets.

The site is blamed for a 2007 hacking of an Internet cafe which affected dozens and disrupted Web services for more than 60 hours.

More than 12,000 of its 180,000 members are paying and had contributed more than 7 million yuan (about P46 million) in fees.

It seems that Black Hawk Safety Net is not about to yield, though, as a notice has been circulating the Web, saying that a back-up site has been set up while blaming some Internet users for ruining its reputation. It even has the audacity to say, "We must join forces and attack these websites."

China is certainly not alone in its cyber-crime woes, as hacking is also quite prevalent in the Philippines. Remember the recent attacks on some of our government websites?
