Dell joins the local ultrabook party, launches the XPS 13 in PH

It may have been a bit late to the local ultrabook party but Dell is still having high hopes to make a big splash in the pool by unleashing a new contender, the XPS 13. This one has the main characteristics of its kind plus a couple of nifties that makes it stand out from the pack.

Coming in 3 variants, the XPS 13 will have a second-generation Intel Core i5 2467M or Core i7 2637M processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and Intel HD 3000 graphics. Just like the ASUS Zenbook and the HP Folio 13, it also ditches an HDD drive in favor of the speedier, albeit more expensive, SSD (solid-state drive) at 128GB of 256GB capacity to achieve better overall performance and a slimmer profile. The XPS 13 also manages to pack a 13.3-inch HD WLED display (1366 x 768) in a form factor normally designed for smaller screens.

In terms of looks, the XPS 13 looks very similar to others in its class, sporting an aluminum exterior and a slim profile at just 6mm at its thinnest point. It's also quite the lightweight (although probably not the lightest of all ultrabooks), tipping the scales at just 1.36kg.

As we've said, Dell's newest bad boy comes with a couple of features you might not expect from an ultrabook. First off, its display is made with hardened Gorilla Glass which makes it more resistant to damage. Then there's the carbon fiber chassis which gives it that robust feel and a more durable body. Hopefully, this also leads to a cooler computing experience on the part of the user. Dell also says the XPS 13 can run for 8 to 12 hours on a single charge, possibly making it among energizer bunnies of the ultrabook brood.

Now, for the pricing and availability, the base version of the XPS 13 (Core i5 chip, 128GB SSD) will cost P59,590. The mid-level variant (Core i5, 256GB SSD) will go for P71,990 while the most expensive model (Core i7, 256GB SSD), will cost you a whopping P79,990. With these prices, the XPS 13 is, by far, the most expensive ultrabook to arrive on our shores, making you wish it performs as good, or even better than advertised. Needless to say, it's a very premium product.
