Google to deliver 1Gbps Internet to up to 500,000 people
After causing buzz yesterday because of the introduction of the Facebook-like Buzz, Google is causing quite a stir again today. Our Big Brother has announced its plan to build and test fiber-based, high-speed broadband networks in trial locations across the United States. That means Internet connection speeds of 1Gbps, a far cry from the Philippines' average download and upload speeds of 2.34Mbps and 0.65Mbps. Don't we Filipinos wish we were based in the States if only for this?

Google is going to offer the open-access, fiber-to-the-home service at a still-to-be-determined "competitive price" to anywhere between 50,000 and 500,000 people. Right now, it's asking interested communities to apply here. Target communities will be announced later this year.
This move has been consistent with Google's pro-Internet neutrality effort. Industry analysts have all agreed that ultra-fast Net speeds are important to a country's economic, social, and cultural development. Now, if only our next president would just make this one of his priorities...
