LeBron James opens Twitter account

LeBron James joins Twitter

He's big, he's powerful, and he likes his shorties – his short messages, that is. Basketball superstar LeBron James has finally joined the Twitterverse in an effort to connect with his fans around the world. The culprit behind his sudden embrace of microblogging? No other than fellow baller Chris Paul (@oneandonlycp3).

The 25-year-old James, who now also goes by the name @kingjames, tweeted his first message yesterday, which simply read:

"Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building 'Finally'. My Brother @oneandonlycp3 gas'd me up to jump on board so I'm here. Haaaa"

first tweet

No doubt the (former?) Cleveland Cavalier wanted to make it clear that he's personally putting up the tweets and that the account is totally legit, facts that his publicist, Keith Estabrook, confirms.

Naturally, it is to be expected that a celebrity like James would rack up fans in record time. According to a report by the Chicago Tribune, James had 18,000 followers at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6 (1 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, Philippine time). At press time, he already has over 173,000.

Estabrook denied rumors that the world's most eligible free agent will announce his choice of team via Twitter. If you ask us, however, the timing couldn't be more suspicious.
