Lenovo to unveil game console this November

Lenovo Ebox

China Daily reports that Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo is currently developing its own game console, which will rival the Wii, the PS3, and most especially the Xbox 360. The machine, known only as the "EBox," was created by Beijing eedoo Technology, a spin-off group from Lenovo that involves some 40 programmers.

Ebox is the second controller-free home gaming console ever made, and it is hoping to get a stronghold of the currently console-less Chinese market once it becomes available. According Jack Luo, a former department chief with Lenovo and now president of Beijing eedoo Technology, the Ebox will be officially unveiled this November but will only begin appearing on store shelves early next year (Q1 2011).

Luo adds, "Our product is designed for family entertainment. Ebox may not have exquisite game graphics or extensive violence, but it can inspire family members to get off the couch and get some exercise." Okay, so it's a Wii360?

Lenovo EboxThe price isn't final yet, although Luo said that it "may be slightly lower than Microsoft's Xbox, which retails for $299.99 (about P15,000)." At that price, the Ebox will ship with 30 free supposedly sucky games.

We've no doubt Lenovo's hardware will be up to snuff, but if it wants to survive in the gaming world, it has to make deals with game developers – fast! Remember what happened to Sega and the Dreamcast?
