New PS3 firmware to enable Blu-ray, YouTube 3D support

PS3D

To say that Sony is going all out to support 3D is an understatement. In fact, to say that it's the company's thrust is also watering down the truth. Today, with an impending firmware update (due September) that promises to bring 3D Blu-Ray and 3D YouTube support to PS3, it's very clear that Sony is living in the 3rd dimension.

Much like what they did with the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD war of 2006-2008, Sony is using the PS3 to push 3D technology into our homes.

According to Mick Hocking, senior director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) during an interview with CVG, the PS3 is definitely powerful enough (hardware-wise) to handle the demands of 3D technology. It's only a matter of updating the firmware to make the machine 3D-capable on the software end.

That's good news, really, given that we no longer have to invest more on our P14,000 consoles. The bad news, however, is that 3D TVs aren't exactly cheap. The cheapest one on sale today is the Samsung UA40C7000WRXXP 3D LED TV, which sells for P169,990 with only 2 3D glasses included.

Nonetheless, we're glad to know that soon we'll have the option to enjoy real 3D gaming in our own living rooms. When that day comes, give us a day or 2 to keep you posted. We might be too engrossed with the experience.
