P9,999 Cherry Mobile W900 'Dragon Phone' officially launched

And, as expected, Cherry Mobile has officially unleashed the W900 a.k.a 'Dragon Phone' into the local smartphone wars. Given its label (we'll give you the reason behind it in a bit), we think it would've been a perfect fit if it was launched during the Chinese New Year festivities but, hey, we're not complaining.

We've already discussed the W900's specs here so we'll just give you a short briefer. The device comes with a 4-inch touchscreen (480 x 800 pixels), 1GB of internal storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD), a 5-megapixel main camera with 720p HD video recording (VGA secondary) and 512MB of RAM. Standard wireless connectivity options (Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth) are part of the package as well.

Now, why call the W900 the 'Dragon Phone'? Simple. It has a 1.2GHz Snapdragon CPU beating inside it to take care of the mobile computing chores. We also discovered a few nifty features that you might have a hard time finding in other phones within the W900's category. For one, this handset comes with DLNA connectivity, more camera modes and settings not found on other camera phones within its price range and the audio pop-up feature that automatically shows you a list of options whenever you plug in your earphones.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread runs the show for this baby and, the good news is, according to a Cherry Mobile exec, the W900's hardware can handle Ice Cream Sandwich so an update is possibly headed our way. As for the asking price, this one is more affordable than others in its class and is now available for P9,999. We'll be coming up with an unboxing piece very soon (and a review next week) so, stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the gallery below for photos.
