Air is life. It is therefore essential that we make sure that it is clean and free from harmful elements. However, because of the byproducts of progress, the quality of the air that we breathe has greatly diminished over the years. Pollution, in effect, has not only become a major environmental problem but also a far-reaching health hazard. It's penetrating our homes, schools and offices, and we may not even be aware of it.

To help us combat this problem and safeguard our living spaces, Sharp is offering a revolutionary air sanitizing technology that utilizes positive and negative ions – the PCI (Plasmacluster Ion) Technology. Similar to how nature purifies the air, it emits highly safe positive and negative ions that effectively remove more than 99% of air impurities, releasing 25,000 ions within a 1 cubic centimeter space. This natural air cleaning system inhibits the infectivity of airborne bacteria, allergens and viruses like A(H1N1) Human Influenza and Bird Flu.

"When two ions stick to the surface of an airborne virus, they transform into a highly oxidizing OH radical and draw out the hydrogen from the protein of the virus. OH radicals exert the strongest attractive force on hydrogen out of all the oxides," says Prof. John Oxford, Professor of Virology at the University of London and Scientific Director of Retroscreen Virology Limited. "As a result, protein, from which hydrogen has been taken is degraded. The OH radical then combines with hydrogen to form water which returns to air. This process happens in an instant, completely removing the virus," he adds.

Sharp appliances equipped with PCI technology include air purifiers, ion generators, refrigerators and airconditioners. The effectiveness of this technology in these products have been validated and confirmed by various test facilities in Japan and around the world.
