Avision 42AL69

Posted on: 11/23 by Elijah Mendoza

There's cheap, and there's ka-razy cheap. As you might have guessed, the Avision 42AL69 belongs to the latter. It's the cheapest full HD 42-inch LCD TV in the Philippines today, and it's packin' some serious value-added features.

Besides the size, there's nothing physically unique about the 42AL69. In fact, it has all the tell-tale signs that it was shipped straight from the motherland of all electronics – China. The design is uninspired, the buttons are rickety, and the look and feel of the menus is generic. It's literally a cookie-cutter appliance, and don't be surprised if you see the exact same model elsewhere with a different brand name.

Of course, if recent gadget history had taught us anything, it's that not everything that comes from China sucks. This LCD TV is actually quite decent owing in no small way to its unbelievably low price tag of just P49,990. To date, this is the cheapest full HD TV in the country, but that's not the only thing that's special about it.

The Avision 42AL69 has more than enough ports for your lot of HD-lovin' equipment. There are three HDMI ports and two component ports at your disposal and two composite ports for ancient video sources such as VHS players and – God forbid – Betamax.

There's also a pair of USB ports that lets you hook up a flash drive so you can view photos (Jpeg), videos (DivX 3.1, Mpeg2, Mpeg1, Mpeg 4), and music (MP3) without the need for a separate player or source. We'd have to warn you though that since this is already a Full HD TV, you may be disappointed with how your standard definition (SD) videos come out.

Hooked up to a Sony PlayStation 3, we found no apparent motion issues or artefacting during fast paced scenes. Color settings are tweakable and can be adjusted to your liking. Blacks come out fine although not as deep as those on the more expensive BRAVIA X-series or Samsung LED TVs. In other words, you get what you pay for with this monster.

The 42AL69 is a great LCD TV for HD noobs. For those with more demanding tastes (and deeper pockets), however, this would work fine as a second TV set.
