Flip Mino HD

When the Flip Video Ultra was introduced in 2007, it was an instant hit. Its premise was that sharing videos over the Internet should be as easy as capturing the footage themselves. Fast forward to 2010: Today, HDTVs have entered the mainstream and Cisco Systems has followed suit with the Flip Mino HD. But does "the world's number 1 pocket cam" still have the same appeal?

Before we answer that, allow us tell you a bit about the product itself. The Mino HD has retained the original Flip's core values – the camera is just as easy to work and the FlipShare software is just as idiot-proof.

The trademark built-in USB plug has lost is plastic housing and is now a single piece of steel while the chassis itself has been given the glossy and curvy treatment. Compared to its predecessor, the Mino HD is a lot sexier especially with the larger 2-inch screen.

The process for uploading videos has remained the same. Simply plug the Mino HD into your computer, follow the instructions, and you're good to go. The software still does everything for you, although uploads now take a bit longer given that videos are now in 1280 x 720p HD in MP4 format.

Video quality is excellent for a pocket cam. Footage captured outdoors look great when displayed on a 32-inch HD TV. Indoors, videos are acceptable at best, but that is to be expected, especially since the Mino HD doesn't have a built-in video light, which is more than what we could say about the Canon Vixia FS21.

The lens' viewing angle is comfortable enough to use in confined spaces such as a small living room or bedroom. Any smaller – say, in an elevator – and it's not advisable.

If you want to get creative, purchase a jelly/illusion lens from your friendly neighborhood tiangge, and you can let your imagination run wild. Note that the Mino HD's flat lens will let you stick other adhesive accessories with ease.

Both the 4GB and the 8GB versions are available in the Philippines for P7,995 and P9,995, respectively. The 4GB version is good for 1 hour of shooting while the larger 8GB will fetch you double that. Battery life varies from 1-1.5 hours, not impressive but not bad either.

Now, going back to the question: Does "the world's number 1 pocket cam" still have the same appeal? In and of itself, yes. The Mino HD is still a great video camera. The problem is, with more and more digital cameras and mobile phones packing HD video-shooting capabilities, its days could be numbered.

If you have no intentions of upgrading to a P25,000, P35,000, or even a P50,000 within the next year or so, then this is definitely a worthy purchase.
