GE E850
If brand names were the yardstick for all gadget buyers, then conventional wisdom dictates that we should all grab a hold of the GE E850. But good technology - and the eventual parting of your hard-earned cash - isn't always about name recall. There's this little thing called "performance" that everyone is equally concerned about.
Pogi but...
At first glance, the E850 is a well-built camera that can win your attention when placed alongside Sony and Canon models. Its pogi finish is something to rave about: sleek design, a three-inch LCD, and traditional but highly effective rotary dials. You can even say that it's just like any other digicam.
That is, until you use it.
It is in the E850's performance where GE's rookie mistakes pop out. At its lowest ISO 80 setting, noise is still visible, rendering snaps at ISO 100 or higher almost unfit for viewing. Translation: The E850 can only produce decent snaps in bright environs. Using the flash works for indoor settings, and, although the 30-second maximum shutter speed allows you to shoot night shots, there's still a good amount of noise in the pictures.
Although this isn't GE's first venture into the digital camera market, the E850 is still not at par with the big boys. But the good news is they're getting there, albeit slowly, as proven by the E850's design. With a cheaper tag price and its looks-like-a-decent-cam exterior, the E850 can be a good startup camera that you won't be ashamed of.
