Jennifer's Body

Ah, Megan Fox. There's no denying that you're the new hotness and the very object of desire of teenage boys (and teenage boys at heart) the world over. If only Jennifer's Body were half as hot as your body, you'd be a certified superstar right now...

We'll cook your goose early: This movie is PG-13. That's the actual MTRCB classification and the audience that it appeals to. Jennifer's Body is nowhere near becoming a classic horror film like Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and even The Ring even if it is written by Academy Award-winning writer Diablo Cody.

That's not to say, though, that Jennifer's Body is not enjoyable. Besides using every trick in the book to make slutty, small-town American girl Jennifer Check (Fox) show parts her bod, the movie showcases Megan Fox's erstwhile under-used comedic timing. There are many instances when she just blurts out a joke or a funny comment out of the blue, thus catching the audience off guard.

Playing a semi-lead role in Jennifer's Body is Jennifer's BFF (yes, they really are BFFs and they even have BFF necklaces to prove it) Anita "Needy" Lesnicki played by Amanda Seyfried of Mamma Mia! fame. Needy is the anti-Jennifer in every way: she's docile, soft-spoken, and not at all popular. She appears in more scenes in the movie and has more speaking roles than any other character, making it quite unfair for her not to appear in the movie's poster.

Needy also plays as the narrator over the entire duration of the movie. Her words read like an emo kid's diary, we kid you not. Each phrase is full of teenage angst, making the screenplay sound humorous sometimes shallow. There's gratuitous use of words like "freaktarded," "shit," and "fuck," making the overall screenplay sound less mature than it could have been.

All in all, Jennifer's Body is a good barkada flick. It's something you'll want to talk to your friends about after the movie that is, if you get the humor. If you're only expecting titillation from Megan Fox, however, you may be disappointed.

Jennifer's Body opens in theaters nationwide on October 28.

  • Light moments and teen-centric jokes
  • Megan Fox, who else?
  • Not for mature audiences
  • The dialogue is like so, you know, like whatever!
Bottom Line
  • We expected more from Diablo Cody. It's good to know that Megan Fox could be more than just a body, though
