Logitech Laptop Speaker Z205

The words “convenient," “portable,” and “affordable” never fail to get consumers' attention, and with the growing number of laptop owners in the country, they'll naturally look for peripherals that take up little room, can be used anytime and anywhere, and give them exactly what they need for a good price. The Logitech Laptop Speaker Z205 aims to capture that particular market, scoring favorably in many aspects.

The clip-on Z205 can be placed on the top portion of laptops' displays and become part of your standard/multimedia/gaming rig through a USB 2.0 cable, but you can also use a 3.5mm audio cable to hook it up to other devices. Most users will need only the USB cable, and springing for a 3.5mm cable (which the package doesn't include) isn't a big deal.

Logitech states that the speaker “clips securely to most laptops and netbooks,” but expect it to be a bit on the wobbly side when adjusting your screen for the right viewing angle. Despite that, the unit won't fall off, so there's no reason to be a worrywart. Being clad in traditional black also makes sure that the Z205 takes on a supporting role of sorts and doesn't take the spotlight away from your laptop.

What we liked best about Logitech's latest auditory offering is that it truly abides by its plug-and-play promise. The absence of an installation CD and user manual (which most consumers don't really use unless problems come up) is a very rare thing. Once you connect it to your USB port, you can sit back and relax, as your OS does the work for you. In our case, we used a laptop with Windows 7 on it; all we needed was a few minutes for the OS to finish installing the necessary drivers, and we were good to go.

One of the earliest lessons in life that most people learn is never to underestimate someone or something smaller than the norm. And for a compact speaker set, the Z205 can sure pump up the volume! You've been warned: Adjust your default volume settings first before plugging this noisemaker in if you don't want to scramble for the audio controls later on.

The Z205 is a boon for those who are unsatisfied with their lappies' built-in speakers or have slight hearing problems – it effectively fills the room with sound, great for multimedia files and VoIP calls. We had a grand time with our music and video files and temporarily called a cool-off period with our earphones and headsets.

However, we have 2 observations that prevented this speaker from getting 5 stars. First, users will hear audible static when the speaker is plugged in but not in use. This happens even when the volume isn't at the maximum level. This may be an isolated case; it can be attributed either to the test unit or our laptop's sound card and motherboard. The second downside is that while we generally liked the audio quality that we got, more bass would've been great.

Logitech's US website gives a $40 market price for the Z205, equivalent to about P2,000 based on current exchange rates + taxes and whatnots. Suprisingly, it drops for a lot less than that locally - P1,680 - which, basically means it is going to turn a lot of laptop owners into happy campers!
