MyPhone Q21 Duo Ninoy-Cory Edition

MyPhone Q21 Ninoy-Cory Edition

It's no secret that Aquino Magic 2.0 is on the verge of taking Philippine politics into a new direction. But can its whimsy also take Filipino gadgets like the MyPhone Q21 Duo Ninoy-Cory Edition into a whole new level?

MyPhone Q21 Ninoy-Cory Edition

Local manufacturers have learned much from their foreign counterparts. From the box design alone, it's clear that a dedicated design team put some real thought and effort into creating the artwork.

Standard parts like a USB travel charger and headset (not in photo) are included as well as a special Yellow Ribbon trinket that attaches to the phone, thus giving it a more authentic look. Other than the special paint job and the installed Aquino prayers, speeches, and biographies, this special-edition phone is practically the same as its plain Jane counterpart.

Powering up the phone plays an awfully loud piano track followed by Ninoy saying "be a hero." Shutting down, on the other hand, plays a Cory Aquino track thanking us for, er, using her phone. In between are all the goodies and freebies that any Aquino loyalist will surely love. It's a real downer, though, that there are no video tracks included and most of the content are uttered by a narrator and not by Ninoy and Cory themselves.

The MyPhone Q21 Duo's plastic body is solidly built, and its quality is comparable to that of the big N's. Keys are stable and easy to press, and the heft is just right for a phone its size. The two SIM slots as well as the microSD slot (2GB included) are neatly arranged underneath the battery compartment.

The screen and the menus are the only two things that are below par with this phone. Screen resolution is lacking at 220x176 pixels especially considering its 2.2-inch size. Pixels are easily visible, thus making edges and contours look rough.

A bevy of pre-installed apps are at your disposal. At the center of it all is the Aquino menu which contains all the freebies that make this phone unique. If you're not in the mood for patriotic stuff, however, there are others like Pep.ph, ABS-CBN, Facebook, and Wikipedia for you to access. Be warned, though. There's neither Wi-Fi nor 3G, so you'll have to make do with slow GPRS.

MyPhone Q21 Ninoy-Cory Edition

For a limited edition, special edition, collectors' edition... the P5,000 is definitely more than worth it. The MyPhone Q21 Duo will work great as a primary phone until the elections this May. After that, however, it could still be used as a backup phone... assuming the good Aquino name doesn't get dragged in the mud by its two biggest personalities. You know who we're talking about.

  1. Philip: you gave it a 5-star value all because it is a Ninoy-Cory collector's item for crying out loud? how about if walang Ninoy-Cory engravings and paint yan, would you still give it 5-stars? kasi if other than its features i'd certainly make a boycott campaign for this. sana yang rating nyo is agreeable naman nang majority of the consumers who will also consider this review. come on, you're reviewing a gadget, not Ninoy and Cory!

  2. elijah mendoza: @Philip Please check the rating again. We gave it a 5 for value because it's cheap. The overall rating is 4.

  3. elijah mendoza: P.S. We're aware that we're reviewing a gadget and not Ninoy and Cory. They're dead. And they're people.

  4. Andrei Bargas: gudPM!
i have the same phone but i made the SILLY mistake of formatting the memory card.. and SO, the aquino files were erased. having said that, i'm asking you a favor if you could please email me the files.. or, cause i know it won't fit, if maybe you could upload it somewhere and I'll just download it and never ERASE it ACCIDENTALLY ever. i'd really be grateful. :) thanks!
    pls reply.

  5. elijah mendoza: would love to help you Andrei but the demo unit is no longer with us. and yeah, that may take a while to email. I'm sure the guys at the Cherry Mobile store in SM North Annex will be able to let you copy the stuff. Just show them your receipt.

  6. Andrei Bargas: alright.. i'll see if i can do that cause i live all here in the south. hehe. thanks elijah :)

  7. Adrian Basa: just placed an order for this myPhone Q21 Ninoy Cory Edition. :)

  8. Meil: @ elijah mendoza
this phone is not a Cherry Mobile, it's Myphone. You won't get the Ninoy files from that Cherry Mobile store. I suggest you visit Sony Service Centers, they have all those files for your phone.

  9. elijah mendoza: @Meil D'oh! My bad. Sorry about that. I must've been reading one too many comments on the Cherry Mobile Q7 (http://www.techie.com.ph/news/cherry-mobile-q7-dualsim-tv-phone-coming-soon) which a lot of you are also interested in.

Any way Andrei, just change the "Cherry Mobile store in SM North Annex" to Automatic Center. They sell the Ninoy-Cory phones there. =)
    February 12, 2010 at 10:13 am

  10. Andrei Bargas: If it's sold at automatic center, then maybe i could check the sm southmall branch since it's nearer.. i'll do it this week.. i'll just update you guys.. thanks :)

  11. Leo Prieto: What do you mean with this?

The MyPhone Q21 Duo will work great as a primary phone until the elections this May. After that, however, it could still be used as a backup phone... *ssuming the good Aquino name doesn't get dragged in the mud by its two biggest personalities. You know who we're talking about.

is it the phone will no longer usable after may elections?
    March 3, 2010 at 10:29 am

  12. elijah m: @Leo it's a joke. Of course the phone will still work after the May elections. We just implied that just in case Noy (or her uber-famous sister) does anything to disgrace the good Aquino name, owners of this phone may not be as willing to show it in public.
