Samsung R480

Samsung recently outed its latest laptop contenders for the Philippine market, with the Intel Core i5-powered R480 (aka the tongue-twisting NP-R480-JT03PH) taking center stage. This particular model has caught the attention of many folks with what it's got inside and out, but how does it fare compared to the rest of the pack?

It's only natural for the sleek red-and-black R480 to be given the latest in tech innards: Intel Core i5 processor, Nvidia GeForce GT330M graphics, eSATA and HDMI slots, and a 14-inch HD LED display are only some of the fixtures in today's lappies; we're sure you know the drill.

The R480 seems to be a tad thicker than other laptops, but hey, we don't want it to go on a diet anytime soon. It does spring a couple of surprises, such as the inclusion of an ExpressCard slot and an S-pattern design that definitely sets it apart from its brethren in terms of looks.

Lifting the lid yields a very responsive (and quiet) chiclet keyboard along with an integrated touchpad, bordered by 4 teeny-tiny blue indicator lights. We eagerly laid our hands on the R480 – and proceeded to leave behind ugly marks all over the rig. Yes, the laptop's attractive, but apparently, it has a thing for fingerprints and handprints, too. If the NBI and PNP SOCO want our prints, they'd have a field day dusting this lappie.

With the specs that it has, expecting it to perform well is par for the course. You won't be disappointed; Novabench gives the R480 a score of 614 with a respectable turnout for CPU, memory, graphics, and hardware tests, and it also garners a 5.9 Windows Experience Index rating.

You'll also know when this laptop is being put through the wringer; the default setting comes with an Intel Turbo Boost Technology desktop gadget, which shows a blue bar when the programs you're running require more power from the i5 processor. This added visual aid will come in handy when doing heavy-duty gaming or work.

Since it has the brawn to back it up, the R480 doesn't break a sweat when it comes to everyday tasks and multimedia requirements – our videos, games, and audio files were given the justice they deserve through great graphics and passable audio quality through the speakers on the lower front side (below the trackpad).

The 14-inch LED screen provides a good dose of eye candy under any type of lighting (even under direct sunlight), although we would've wanted more contrasts. Of course, Samsung throws in its proprietary software suite that includes display, network, recovery, support and update functions, a battery life extender, and a nifty Chargeable USB feature that lets you recharge USB-powered devices even if the laptop isn't in use.

It's foolish to expect a perfect product, and the R480 isn't spared from some slight blemishes. Its measly 2 hours and 15 minutes' worth of battery life promptly wiped the wide grin off our face. And this laptop's looks and inner workings can prove a little too hot to handle; the left side of the unit spews out a fair amount of heat, which a mistakenly placed mobile phone and set of house keys ended up getting after a couple of minutes. It's not the searing kind of heat, but we suggest taking extra care of your left thigh when this unit's sitting pretty on your lap.

The Samsung R480 isn't meant to be a wallflower; this lady is the life of the party, and you'll definitely want to get acquainted with it. However, make sure that it has a dust cloth and charger in its purse.
