Sony MDR-XB500

The first thing that'll grab your attention about the Sony MDR-XB500 is its size. It's huge if not laughably so. But if you're a hip-hop, trip-hop, or blues fan, you should think about give this baby a try.

Are those leather couches on your ear?

Damn huge alright, but the XB500 feel nice and snug on your ears. They don't squeeze your head, and surprisingly, they won't make your ears sweat. These faux leather ear cushions simply do two things: trap in the music and trap out the noise. Not that you'd wear this on the bus, right? It's a dead giveaway to muggers that you aren't operating in the now.

It does, however, deliver on its name and promise: you want extra bass, here's extra bass, supahsize! But here's the genius about this Sony XB: it doesn't make you feel as though it dictates your pulse. Unlike the harshness of live music, the XB has the acoustics leveled out. So, say, you're listening to Chilli Peppers, Flea doesn't wash out John. You'll be able to hear deep bass slaps as well as all the mid-range and high-frequency sounds like the guitars and the vocals.

Do we still make sense? If yes, then you should give the XB a chance-you know and care enough about your music to appreciate what the XB offers, promises, and actually delivers. If no, it doesn't mean your music-Pop? Country?- won't be richly presented. As a matter of fact, they'll sound the way better than ever! It only means you may have already been turned off by its size.

By the time you've started your sound trip, you'd be quicker to forget about its form. Our only gripe? You're on a solo flight to the trippiest sound binge you can get on. Imagine hearing Thievery Corporation as presented by the XB with your friends. Open your eyes, now mate. Wow, we know.
