Starfish Speaker

Posted on: 04/21/09 by Elijah Mendoza

This speaker is barely the size of a computer mouse, and it hardly looks as if it's loud enough to cause a racket. We were so wrong.

Looks can be deceiving, especially when it comes to gadgets, but this diminutive starfish-shaped speaker still managed to catch us by surprise. The lone speaker driver is just as big as a five-peso coin, but once turned on, it's as loud as a desktop sound system.

The Starfish Speaker connects to any standard 3.5mm jack, so it's great for laptops, desktops, and of course, MP3 players. It's powered by a built-in battery that charges via your computer's USB port. One full charge is good enough for more than a week's worth of extensive playing.

This speaker is best used for private (insert wink here) and small group listening sessions. There's no need to buy AAs or to lug an A/C power supply. Plus, it's as cute as a button.

Don't expect the sound quality to be outstanding, though -- it's an unbranded device, plus it consists of a single speaker, meaning output is limited to mono. While we give it kudos for being able to deliver music with clarity and some volume, there's much that remains to be desired with low frequencies.
